June 21, 2002, Newsletter Issue #36: Effective use of colors

Tip of the Week

Sometimes I`m at a loss for what kind of color scheme to start with on a web site. For instance, if I`m given creative control, and the company/person really doesn`t know or care what colors or scheme is used... as long as it looks good, I might just start by getting ideas from the color wheel, and selecting a few basic complementary colors. Okay. What are complementary colors you ask? These are the colors OPPOSITE from each other on the color wheel. What is a color wheel? More or less it`s a circular representation of the available colors, in order from blue, green, yellow, orange, red, purple, and back to blue. With the hues and transitions in between. See my example here: http://www.angelfire.com/freak/paulcutrona/primary.html

Next, take a look at the opposing colors: purple-yellow, red-green, blue-orange. Not only are these logical choices for good contrast, but they complement each other by making the other more vivid. More lively. Here`s an example of the complementary color chart: http://www.angelfire.com/freak/paulcutrona/complementary.html

Have fun!!!
