Instead of hiring a web design company, why don't I just use someone in house to create my Web site?

Should I hire a web design company or hire an in-house web developer?

Instead of hiring a web design company, why don't I just use someone in house to create my Web site?

A good web design company will assign an entire development team to each project. By choosing a web design company over developing a project in house, you are harnessing the knowledge of a creative team of web designers, web programmers and web marketing professionals, as well as a management team with years of experience on the internet. You would have to recruit and hire several full-time employees to match what a good web design company can offer.

I disagree!
First off, having been a web developer with over 10 years experience working with Consumer Products companies, I have seen nothing but disastrous results working with outside agencies alone.
1. They do not know your business as well as internal staff. Nor, can they promote the opportunities online offers as well as an internal web evangelist.
2. They are in the business to make money and the value of the relationship is based on that. If your company falls to the lower side of account value, you will get less experts and less dedication. You get what you pay for.
3. Agency response rate to changing business needs and strategies is slow and expensive.
4. Web sites are living breathing essential parts to the businesses that require constant updates and overall maintenance. Agencies cannot evolve the site as well as internal staff. Agencies follow contracts, not what's good or right for the company.
5. One very diverse web developer / project manager, and one or two very good freelance graphic artists are all you need to build and maintain numerous corporate and brand sites. I know, I did it for over seven years.
Finally, the best scenario is to let in-house management run each project in partnership with the sponsoring business function. Use outside resources as an extension of internal staff when special skills or executions are necessary. By building a resource toolkit comprised of both internal and external resources, but led by one internal staff manager, is the best way to run an ever-expanding, evolving, web development department.
